Working at a Dutch company from Poland: a clash of cultures

Have you ever wondered how it would be to work at a company from a foreign country? What if you start working for a Dutch company and your new boss isn’t from the same country as you are? Being from Poland, joining Marviq has had a strong impact on me. I’d like to share how I encountered what some would call a culture clash – but in a positive way.

A Dutch project

Before joining Marviq, I had only worked on a Dutch project once. This one particular project though, among others, always remained close to my heart. I remember when the project was nearing its end and feeling that rather than being a programmer working for the client, we were friends working on the same project. We weren’t just working to complete the project, but it was something more. Now you could probably say that I was just lucky to be working with friendly people. But is that really the case, or was there something else at play?

As time passed by, some circumstances influenced me to change my then-current job. That’s when I came across Marviq, which at that point was still just one of the few companies I was applying to. But Marviq had something special, and it started from the very first interview. During all the interviews, I had this feeling telling me that they really wanted me. I remember talking to the Dutch CEO of Marviq and mentioning that one Dutch project I worked on. This is when the magic started and all the positive memories came back.

Let me explain why I’m so excited about that moment. I am from Poland. I am Polish. I am a patriot. I love my country, the people, the traditions and so on. But a lot of Polish people have the same personality traits: we are reserved people and like to complain. We are used to this, but it also means that it is quite a clash of cultures when we meet someone who is very friendly and open. And that’s what the Dutch are like.

There’s a saying: “who keeps company with the wolves will learn to howl”, which means that people tend to take on the characteristics of those they associate with. I believe that this is also the case for me, as I noticed that I started smiling more often because of the positive atmosphere at Marviq. The Dutch are very open and transparent and they expect the same from you – “If you don’t tell me that something is wrong, I won’t be able to help you fix the problem”.

I hope this gives you an idea of how it is to work at Marviq when you’re from Poland or another foreign country. Even though I work remotely, I haven’t felt alone since I started working here. If you’re looking for a company in which you feel like friends rather than colleagues, head to Marviq without hesitation!
